Mat
Each level of mat
exercises helps the student apply the fundamental principles of the Pilates
method of exercise. The exercises become more complicated and sophisticated - with
varying speed and rhythm - as the practitioner progresses in their
learning. Emphasis on breathing, flexibility of the spine, and
building deep abdominal
strength help define these classes.
- Introduction to Mat
Becoming fit and healthy by learning the 5 basic principles of
Pilates: breath, concentration, oppositional energy, smooth
fluid movements, and precise control from the core or powerhouse.
- Beginning Mat
Building on the 5 basic principles, this level introduces all of
the basic 10 exercises of classical Pilates. Focus is on
strengthening the abdominals while stretching short tight muscles and
toning loose ill defined muscles.
- Interim Mat
The student needs to have the strength and ability to execute the basic 10
exercises. This class adds tempo and complexity to the workout. At this
level hamstrings have loosened, the overall
body has tone and strength, and the spine has mobility and one works
from the core.
- Advanced Mat
A serious workout for the healthy body, well educated in the Pilates
method. The class requires great
strength, flexibility and endurance. 36 advanced exercises are
practiced with tempo and agility.

| Equipment
Classes
The Pilates Equipment (Cadillac or
trapeze table, reformer, chair, ped-o-pull) uses spring tension to either support the body and
facilitate movement or add challenge and
resistance. Exercise with the spring tension on the equipment leaves
the body feeling longer, stronger, and strengthened from the core. One also
develops stabilizing muscles of the spine, shoulders and pelvis. The
equipment helps the practitioner relieve back discomfort as it helps develop freedom of movement in the joints. The equipment classes are
designed for 3-5 students. Because they are taught in a group
setting on technical apparatus, a basic ability to execute the 5
principles must be developed before taking these classes. Therefore permission of the instructor is required as
well as 5 - 10 mat classes prior to enrolling.
- Group Equipment
3 - 5 students on the Cadillac. This class is suitable for
advanced beginners and above.
- Semi Private
2 - 4 students on the reformer. This class is most suitable for
students who have attained at least an intermediate level in mat
class. Permission of the instructor is required.
- Chair Class
3 - 4 students on the Pilates chair. This class has an athletic
orientation and is recommended for the intermediate and advanced
students. Permission of the instructor is required.
